Countries need not be “hostages” to the rapid growth of technology, and can instead find ways to deliver equitable growth while embracing new ideas, the Bank of Canada’s Carolyn Wilkins said on February 8.

Though many factors have led to technology concentrating incomes in the hands of the few at the expense of the many, that outcome need not be assured, the first deputy governor said. Keeping “in check” the market power of the world’s tech giants will be crucial to that aim, she told a G7
