NBK intervenes as Kazakh banking troubles spread

Central bank moves in to rescue one bank and triggers liquidation of another

The National Bank of Kazakhstan has been forced to intervene in the banking sector for a second time in two months, as further banks found themselves in difficulty.

The central bank revoked the licence of Delta Bank due to its “unsustainable” financial position, deputy governor Oleg Smolyakov said on November 6. A day later, the NBK revealed it was stepping in to save RBK Bank, which has a substantially larger loan book than Delta.
