ECB paper examines use of eurozone bank lending survey

Changes in credit standards serve as leading indicators for GDP and bank loan growth, authors say

An occasional paper from European Central Bank outlines the methodology behind its bank lending survey (BLS) and gives an introduction to its use by policy-makers and economists.

The survey has played an increasingly important role in informing monetary policy, particularly since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2007, say the authors, Petra Köhler-Ulbrich, Hannah Hempell and Silvia Scopel.

The BLS now collects data from senior loan officers at more than 140 banks in all 19 eurozone
