Former Bank of Italy governor Carlo Azeglio Ciampi has died at the age of 95 after a long and distinguished career, the bank announced today (September 16). Ciampi was governor of Italy's central bank from October 1979 until April 1993, an extremely turbulent period for European, and perhaps especially Italian, finance.

Ciampi was the only person to have served Italy as central bank governor, prime minister and president. He was also the second longest-serving governor of the Bank of Italy
