BoJ economists shed light on quality-price dynamics
Authors lend support to rule of thumb in use at statistical agencies
Economists from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) shed new light on the question of how firms set prices when launching new, higher-quality products, in a working paper published on June 14.
The five economists draw on a database from an online price-comparison website in Pricing patterns over product life-cycle and quality growth at product turnover, which gives them access to over 5.6 million data points.
They decompose price hikes at a new product's launch into those due purely to quality increases and
