Moldovan governor and first deputy resign as banking scandal intensifies
Amount equivalent to one-eighth of GDP missing from commercial banks
The governor and first deputy governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) resigned on September 21, the central bank confirmed today.
According to local media articles, governor Dorin Dragutanu quit in protest at the handling by local politicians of a major banking scandal within the country. A report commissioned by the central bank has said that an amount equivalent to one-eighth of Moldova's GDP has "disappeared" from its commercial banking system.
