Ukraine president moves to replace central bank chief

Newly elected president wants investment banker installed at NBU

The president of Ukraine today submitted a bill to parliament asking it to replace Stepan Kubiv as governor of the central bank with Valeria Gontareva, a senior investment banker and former head of capital markets at Societe Generale's Ukrainian operation.

Kubiv was installed at the National Bank of Ukraine after the country's government was toppled by popular protests in February. Kubiv was an opposition MP and one of the protests' key organisers, as well as deputy chair of the parliamentary
