Former Bank of Thailand deputy governor named finance minister

Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, 59, was named Thailand's new finance minister on Wednesday. He previously served at the Bank of Thailand for a number years, including as director of the Financial Institution Control and Development Division and eventually as deputy governor.

Thirachai left the central bank and became the secretary of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the country's financial markets watchdog, in 2003. He stepped down from this position last week, presumably to take on his
