Bini Smaghi favourite to next lead Bank of Italy
Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, an executive board member at the European Central Bank (ECB), is viewed by analysts as the favourite to succeed Mario Draghi, the governor of the Bank of Italy, should he take the presidency of the ECB.
Draghi is seen as the frontrunner to succeed Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the ECB, whose term ends in October, leaving the governorship role at Italy's central bank vacant.
Media reports have linked the position to a number of candidates, including Vittorio Grilli
