Canada to switch to polymer

The Bank of Canada is to switch to printing its currency on polymer it emerged on Thursday.

The move, part of Canada's 2010 budget, will see the central bank launch a new currency series with added security features in 2011.

The finance ministry said printing on polymer would cut production costs and the impact of note printing on the environment. At present, Canadian banknotes are printed on cotton-based paper.

Julie Girard, a spokesperson for the Bank of Canada, told CentralBanking.com that
