Bank of England committee split 7-2 over rate cut

The Bank of England's monetary policy committee voted by 7 to 2 in favour of this month's surprise quarter-point cut in interest rates to 3.75 per cent, minutes of its meeting released on Wednesday showed.

Two members of the committee voted to keep rates at 4 per cent - deputy governor Andrew Large and Paul Tucker, a Bank insider.

Mervyn King, who is due to take over as governor of the Bank in July, voted for the cut, as did Sir Edward George, the current governor. The hawkish Mr King voted to
