Bank of Canada deputy warns about negative effects of protectionism

Timothy Lane says populism may lead to less trade and lower standards of living

Protectionist policies may endanger trade and economic growth, and affect monetary policy in Canada, Bank of Canada deputy governor Timothy Lane said in a speech on September 18.

In How Canada’s international trade is changing with the times, Lane says exports and imports represent about 65% of Canada’s output, one of the highest ratios among the G7 countries.
