A Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta working paper proposes an adjustment to the calculation of the US ‘employment-to-population ratio' (EPOP) using "individual micro-data to account for both individual characteristics and the probability of labour force participation".

Adjusted employment-to-population ratio as an indicator of labour market strength, by Julie Hotchkiss, argues that, as a measure of labour market strength, the "raw" EPOP "confounds employment outcomes with labour supply behaviour"
