RBA official: industry needs ‘common vision’ for fast payments
Assistant governor says transaction costs and end users’ requirements need to be addressed
Australian banks, payment firms, government agencies and other stakeholders have not reached consensus on the desired features of account-to-account payments, a central bank official said today (December 12).
Last year, the industry agreed to decommission the Bulk Electronic Clearing System (Becs), by 2030. Launched in 1989, the electronic funds transfer system has been used to process salary and welfare payments, recurring payments to merchants, and other account-to-account transfers.
