Sweden should modernise retail payments – Riksbank study

Clearing infrastructure needs update and card settlement warrants reform, researchers say

Sweden needs to modernise its retail payment infrastructure to meet future needs, a study from the country’s central bank has argued.

In the study, published on November 20, Sveriges Riksbank says recent progress in modernising Sweden’s underlying payment infrastructure has been slow. It says the country’s clearing infrastructure, in particular, has not kept pace with new developments in retail payments.

Currently, only banks and credit card companies have direct access to the clearing
