Brazil suspends WhatsApp payments

Facebook’s app had launched digital payments in Brazil on June 15

The Central Bank of Brazil suspended the use of Facebook’s WhatsApp payments in the country, which the company had launched on June 15.

In a statement, the institution argues the “possible start or continuity of operations without prior analysis of the regulator could generate irreparable damage to the SPB [Brazilian Payment System], notably with regard to competition, efficiency and data privacy”.
