Draghi says ECB’s asset purchases should stay ‘open-ended’

ECB president rejects calls for September end to purchases as inflation forecasts rise slightly

European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said a majority of the bank’s governing council wants its asset purchase programme to continue for an “open-ended” period.

Draghi’s remarks came as the ECB’s governing council published its latest decision on monetary policy. The eurosystem staff’s estimates for eurozone GDP growth and inflation in 2017 and 2018 were revised slightly upwards. Draghi told a press conference that the current eurozone recovery was gathering strength, but it was slow
