Botswana president appoints new governor
Government gives no reason for replacing Pelaelo, who led central bank since 2016
The president of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, appointed Cornelius Dekop governor of the Bank of Botswana on October 23. He succeeds Moses Pelaelo, who has served as governor since October 2016.
The official statement did not explain why Masisi had appointed a new governor, or whether Pelaelo had resigned. The Bank of Botswana’s law provides that the president appoints the governor of the central bank to a maximum of two five-year terms. Pelaelo was in the middle of his second term.
