Timor-Leste to appoint new governor – report

Helder Lopes said to be in line to become second leader of central bank

Helder Lopes is set to become the second governor of Timor-Leste’s central bank, according to a September 7 report from Portuguese news agency Lusa.

The report cites “government sources” who indicated that Lopes will take office in September, succeeding Abrão de Vasconcelos. Prime minister Xanana Gusmão would need approve Lopes, currently vice-minister of finance, for the role.

Lopes was also vice-minister of finance during the government of Rui Maria de Araujo from 2015 and 2017. Before that
