RBNZ deputy governor leaves early over “breach of protocol”

Bascand talked about management restructuring with outside party

Reserve Bank of New Zealand deputy governor Geoff Bascand stepped down early after a local newspaper reported his unauthorised comments about the bank’s staffing changes.

Bascand had planned to leave in January, but media reports say that after his “breach of protocol”, he left office on December 17. However, the RBNZ website still lists him as deputy governor as of January 13.

The hastened departure followed a report in the National Business Review that he had spoken with external parties
