Australia risks shortage of economists, warns RBA’s Dwyer
Students are tending to choose business studies over economics, says the RBA’s head of information
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is concerned that its supply of promising economic graduates is drying up, as fewer young people are choosing to study the subject.
“Economics has an image problem,” Jacqui Dwyer, head of the RBA’s information department, said on July 29. She noted a precipitous drop in the number of economics students in the 1990s appeared to be driven by the advent of business studies, the relevance of which appears more immediately obvious to prospective students.
