Long-standing Uzbek central bank chairman dies
Fayzulla Mullazhanov led the central bank since its formation following the collapse of the Soviet Union
The chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan has died aged 67, the central bank confirmed in a statement on May 23.
Fayzulla Mullazhanov had headed the institution since it formed in the aftermath of the Cold War, and oversaw a period of significant change for the central Asian nation.
Mullazhanov was born in the Sirdarya province to the southwest of Tashkent in 1950. He graduated from the Tashkent Institute of National Economy – now the Tashkent State Economic University – in 1971, and
