Former Suriname governor sentenced to 12 years

A Surinamese court has sentenced Gillmore Hoefdraad, a former central bank governor and finance minister, to 12 years in prison on corruption charges, according to media reports.

The court also fined Hoefdraad S$500,000 ($23,200) in the judgement, handed down on December 17.

The government had charged Hoefdraad as part of a criminal conspiracy to defraud the central bank while he was serving as finance minister. According to the Interpol notice seeking his arrest, Hoefdraad faced charges of
