Malta’s central bank governor steps down to fight criminal case

Bank says Scicluna is leaving temporarily to “defend his innocence”

The governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Edward Scicluna, has left the role temporarily to defend himself in a forthcoming trial for alleged fraud, misappropriation and fraudulent gain.

Scicluna stood aside on July 30 after reaching an agreement with the cabinet, according to media reports. Deputy governor Alexander Demarco took over Scicluna’s duties on August 1.

The case against Scicluna revolves around the 2015 decision by then-prime minister Joseph Muscat’s government to sell public
