Management failings caused Australian equity trading platform outage

Responsibility for upgrade project was unclear, IBM review finds

“Key shortcomings” in the Australian Securities Exchange’s management of a system upgrade caused an outage to a systemically important platform, an independent report has found.

On November 16, 2020, Australia’s main stock exchange – Australia Securities Exchange (ASX) – reported a software issue had caused an outage of its equity trading platform, ASX Trade.

The outage occurred shortly after a major upgrade to the system, closing the market, for a day. The technology underpinning the system
