BIS international banking stats show advanced and emerging market divergence

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has released its latest international banking statistics, covering the first quarter of 2013, showing diverging trends in credit to advanced economies and emerging markets.

According to the locational banking statistics by residence, claims on banks and related offices in advanced economies fell by $329 billion between end-2012 and end-March 2013, or by 9% year-on-year. This marked the sixth consecutive quarterly decline and brought the cumulative
