Belgium’s mint to close in 2018

Coin production will be outsourced to save money, given a decline in production

The Royal Mint of Belgium will cease operation on January 1, 2018, due to a surplus of coins produced in the eurozone.

“The European Commission (EC) wants to optimise stock management and encourage countries to swap coins,” Giovanni Van de Velde, an official from the mint, tells Central Banking.

Belgium’s mint currently produces national euro coins, as well as commercial and commemorative coins. Demand is dictated by the National Bank of Belgium, and demand for euro coins in the small European
