Mersch defends ECB’s Chinese walls

Yves Mersch staunchly defended the European Central Bank's (ECB) plans to separate its monetary policy and supervisory functions today, insisting it would "put the necessary measures in place" to avoid any conflicts of interest.

Mersch, an ECB executive board member, stressed the "supervisory deliberations" on the supervisory board and the governing council will be "strictly separated". The central bank will also set up a mediation panel to resolve any objections the council has to a draft
