Fed to streamline cheque processing

As consumers shift to electronic payments, the Federal Reserve Banks set out plans to streamline cheque processing.

Philadelphia, Cleveland, Atlanta and Dallas will provide services through to at least mid-2011, other sites will see their processing move to these four locations.

The most recent Federal Reserve study showed that about 37 billion checks were paid in the United States in 2003 down from 50 billion in 1995.

Since 2003, the Reserve Banks have reduced the locations where they process
