IMF director calls for fiscal expansion in eurozone

Greek attempts to consolidate fiscal position by increasing top tax rates ‘simply not working’, director says

European states with strong fiscal positions should consider increasing public spending to support demand, said the director of the European department of the International Monetary Fund.

Eurozone countries "that have fiscal space should use it," Poul Thomsen said in Washington, DC on April 15, "ideally by expanding public infrastructure investment".

The crisis caused by refugees entering European Union countries might help usher in necessary spending in countries with fiscal surpluses, Thomsen
