Euro banknote counterfeiting rises 4.4% year-on-year
Fraud reduction benefits of Europa series will not occur for some time
A total of 331,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in the first half of 2014, up 4.4% on the similar period in 2013 but down 6.2% compared with the second half of last year.
Members of the Eurosystem – the European Central Bank (ECB) and the 18 national central banks of the euro area – urged note handlers to "pay attention to the notes they receive" stating that genuine notes can be easily recognised using a "simple" ‘feel, look and tilt' mechanism detailed on the ECB
