Trichet calls for EU executive branch in farewell address

Speaking at his farewell event in Frankfurt am Main on Wednesday evening, outgoing president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Jean-Claude Trichet, took the opportunity to express his personal opinion on the need for an executive branch to make EU-wide decisions on key matters.

Stressing that his words were, "not necessarily [the] views of the Governing Council of the ECB", Trichet asked: "Would it be too bold, in this future Economic and Monetary Union, with a single market, a single currency
