Australian economy stronger than US - Costello

AUSTRALIA - Australian Treasurer Peter Costello said Wednesday that a decision by the Reserve Bank to keep interest rates steady after its board meeting Tuesday isn't surprising given the country is in the midst of an election campaign.

Asked if the central bank would likely review rates after the election Saturday, Costello would only say that Australia's inflation rate is probably lower than in the U.S., where rates were cut Tuesday, but growth in Australia is higher than in the U.S.
