New governor for Iran

Tahmasb Mazaheri, a former Iranian finance minister, was appointed yesterday as head of the country's central bank.

The appointment was one of a number of changes President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made to his top economic policy team.

Mazaheri succeeded Ebrahim Sheibani, who resigned unexpectedly and without explanation after Iran's oil and industry ministers departed on August 12 in a reshuffle, seen as an attempt by the president to tighten his grip on the economy.
