Prodi calls for more economic power for commission

European Commission President Romano Prodi on Friday March 23 reiterated his call for a unified economic policy across the euro zone to help combat market volatility.

"If in days like this Mr.Euro already existed we would all be calmer," Prodi said in a interview with Italian daily la Repubblica. On Thursday, key European stock markets tumbled around four percent and the euro fell close to three-month lows against the dollar. By 0820 GMT on Friday the euro was trading at 0.8888 to the dollar.
