Cyprus and Malta join eurozone
The eurozone became a little larger on Tuesday as Cyprus and Malta, two Mediterranean islands, adopted the single currency.
The islands' participation takes the number of countries in the zone up to 15 and adds about 1.2 million people to the euro area's population.
Both moved to reduce the possibility of inflationary pressures building following euro adoption, a phenomenon which has hit economies such as Ireland's.
