Governor salaries range as high as $1 million

Base pay tends to rise with GDP per capita, but there is wide variation, benchmark data shows

Base pay for the governors of central banks that responded to Governance Benchmarks 2022 can be as high as $1 million per year. But for most respondents, the figure is much lower.

Fifteen central banks provided data on their governors’ salaries, out of 34 that took part in the benchmark.

The lowest governor salary in our sample was $71,500, paid by a central bank in the Americas. The highest was paid by a central bank in Europe: exactly $1 million. Central banks were asked to give salary
