Polymer substrates used on one-fifth of banknotes

Data reveals widening adoption in upper-middle income jurisdictions

The proportion of banknotes printed on a polymer substate averages slightly over 20%, the Currency Benchmarks 2024 reveal.

Polymer as share of substrates used in banknote printing averages 23.3% across 30 jurisdictions. This is as a transition to polymer remains a goal for many central banks.

Most banknotes are still printed on paper, cotton or textile materials – 43.6% on average are varnished, while 24.5% on average are unvarnished. Other substrates account for 4.6%, coming just ahead of hybrid
