Cash payments average over 30% of transactions in 2023

No pressures on number of printed banknotes, central banks say

The proportion of payments made in cash across jurisdictions participating in the Currency Benchmarks 2024 averaged over 30% in the past year.

Central Banking received data from 21 respondents. The share of payments made in cash across their countries averaged 36.2%. In the 2023 benchmark, cash transactions averaged 40.6% among central banks that disclosed data.

The average share of cash payments is higher among middle income countries. Cash payments in high income nations averaged 34.4% in 2023
