Central banks tend to outsource banknote printing

De La Rue is most commonly used printer among respondents

The majority of central banks outsource the printing component of their cash cycle, the Currency Benchmarks 2023 show.

Twenty-three (76.7%) of 30 institutions’ printing function is outsourced. At 16 (53.3%) institutions, banknote design is outsourced. Distribution (26.7%) and sorting (23.3%) roles are also outsourced at eight and seven jurisdictions, respectively.

At the lower end, only three (10%) respondents outsource marketing roles. The least outsourced section is data analytics, reported
