Brief History

The Bank of Greece was established in 1927 and began operations in May 1928 as the central bank of Greece, with its head office in Athens and 17 branches, 2 outlets and 32 agencies nationwide. The Statute of the Bank of Greece:

• explicitly states that the Bank’s primary objective is price stability;
• safeguards the Bank’s independence towards the government or any organisation and its accountability to Parliament; and
• recognises the Bank’s legal integration into the European System
