With the onset of digitalisation in finance, the core functions of banks have gone through many changes. Credit intermediation – the process by which financial institutions such as banks act as a bridge between depositors and borrowers – has evolved into a function that can be carried out through algorithm. Not surprisingly, many market participants believe credit intermediation has the potential to materialise out of thin air.
