Primary RTGS systems have average $1.65m in operating costs
Majority of central banks increased payments system divisions budgets in the past year
The primary real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system of most central banks tends to swallow a large chunk of departmental budgets, the Payments Benchmarks 2023 find.
The sample shows central banks that provided data (11 institutions) spend an average of $1.65 million operating their primary RTGS system each year. The expenditure ranges from a maximum of $13.7 million in a high income institution in Europe, to just $26,480 in an upper-middle income jurisdiction in Africa.
