Bolivian legislators ask to inspect gold reserves
Opposition politicians claim government wants to monetise and spend gold
A group of Bolivian legislators have asked the central bank to permit them to physically inspect the gold held in the institution’s reserves.
The initiative is part of a continuing debate over changes to the management of the country’s gold reserves set out in a draft law. The law is said to allow the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) to collateralise the gold reserves without seeking permission from the legislature. However, the central bank denied this in an August 31 press release.
