The National Assembly of Ecuador voted to remove the superintendent of banks from office on February 22. The legislature impeached Ruth Arregui for failing to perform her legally mandated functions or properly oversee the banking system.

The motion for Arregui’s removal received 85 votes in favour, well above the 69 votes – an absolute majority of legislators – necessary under the constitution to remove a superintendent.

The resolution removing Arregui also barred her from any public office
