Fed’s Brainard backs series of rate hikes followed by asset runoff

Governor says economy is responding appropriately to Fed communications and incoming data

Lael Brainard, a governor of the Federal Reserve, said on February 18 that she backed a series of rate hikes starting at the next meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee.

“Given that we have seen quite strong data, I do anticipate that it will be appropriate at our next meeting, which is just in a few weeks, to initiate a series of rate increases,” Brainard told attendees of the US Monetary Policy Forum. The meeting is scheduled for March 15 and 16.
