Fed keeps investors guessing on speed and endpoint of tightening

Investors generally agree the Fed will tighten policy, but how much and when are unclear

Investors are relatively confident they know what the Federal Reserve is going to do in the next few weeks. After that, things become less certain.

Analysts at bank ING say the January 26 Federal Open Market Committee meeting “should be a non-event”. That has not prevented uncertainty over the Fed’s hawkishness – and escalating geopolitical tensions – sending markets gyrating. On January 24, the S&P 500 fell as much as 4% before rebounding to close up 0.3%. It plunged again in trading today
