German tabloids ramp up personal attacks on Lagarde
ECB board member Isabel Schnabel says “inciting hatred” is “unacceptable”
German tabloids have sharpened their attacks on European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde over the last few weeks.
As inflation has risen in 2021 over the ECB’s 2% target, Lagarde has been lampooned as ‘Madame Inflation’. Bild Zeitung, which sells around 1.6 million printed copies a day, has depicted Lagarde as an official focused on wearing luxury brands such as Chanel, while making German savers and pensioners poorer.
Inflation in the eurozone has been consistently below the 2%
