Mexican president demands IMF assets from central bank

Governor rejects proposal and former presidential ally says it would be legally impossible

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on August 18 that he would ask the central bank to transfer about $12 billion in special drawing rights (SDRs) to the treasury. López Obrador said that “we are going to make a formal approach to the Bank of Mexico so that [the assets] benefit the public treasury and benefit the people”.

Specifically, the president wants to use the SDRs to pay down Mexico’s external debt, an option he mentioned on August 11. López Obrador is noted for
