Why exactly are central banks looking at central bank digital currency (CBDC) when the Federal Reserve’s vice-chair for supervision, Randal Quarles, said in a speech in June 2021 that CBDC may well turn out to be a “fad”?

I’ve been through many central bank and other reports on digital currency and brought together what I think are the pressures for digital currency in the form of half-a-dozen key drivers, structured in such a way to support discussion and debate on the topic.
